He started as a volunteer firefighter with the Cromwell Volunteer Fire Department in Cromwell, Connecticut. Robert relocated to Maryland and joined the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department, the second busiest fire station in Montgomery County. He has received numerous citations and awards from the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department and the State of Maryland. He is currently employed as a firefighter by the Frederick County Fire Rescue Division, where he is assigned to Rescue Squad 3.

In this week's episode of Jumpseat Radio host, Ryan Pennington welcomes Dr. Joe Apuzzio from Union New Jersey and is the father of Fallen Firefighter Kevin Apuzzio. Kevin was a firefighter with the East Franklin Fire Department who selflessly and heroically died during a rescue attempt of 75-year-old Betty Scott. Firefighter Apuzzio died when he became trapped after falling through a floor that collapsed into a well-involved basement....he fell just a few feet from the front door. Mrs. Scott also died in the fire as Kevin and crew were attempting to remove her.

I was born in England and spent almost thirty years there before emigrating to the U.S. My early years saw me in in a spectrum of jobs from lifeguard to stuntman. I had always dreamed of becoming a Firefighter but was told as a child that my poor color vision would disqualify me from the process. It wasn't until I moved to America that I realized that the vision deficit was mild and was a poor excuse for not following my dream. I promptly enrolled in the Fire Academy and the rest is history. I have been a Firefighter/Paramedic for twelve years now and still love it as much as my first day on the job. I am also a Crossfit coach and about to graduate from the University of Florida with a Bachelor's in Exercise Physiology and Kinesiology. |

Robert Piparo
Rob Piparo, better known as Pip, is a Lieutenant with the City of New Brunswick Fire Department, located in New Brunswick, NJ and a Paramedic with Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy, NJ. He has been involved with emergency services for 17 years. Pip holds certifications as a Firefighter 1 & 2, NJ Level 1 Fire Instructor, Extrication, High Angle and Confined Space Technician, NJ and National Registry Paramedic, and Crossfit Level I.
Pip has always been passionate about fitness. He spent several years running half marathons and training strictly with kettlebells until he discovered Crossfit. He is currently a Coach at Iron Crossfit in North Brunswick, NJ . He has also completed a marathon and an Olympic distance triathlon with hopes of someday being able to compete in an ironman distance.
Pip's passion for training lead him to the 555 Fitness page, where he quickly developed a friendship with Larry, its owner. After several months of back and forth banter, Larry asked Pip if he wanted to join the team. John Hawowky: John Hayowyk Jr. has over 20 years in the fire service. He is currently a Captain for the City of Passaic FD in NJ (Ladder 2). John is also a NJ Certified Level 2 Fire Service Instructor and teaches at Passaic & Sussex County Public Safety Academies. He also heads up of the Training Division for the Roxbury Twp. Volunteer Fire Dept and is an active Fire Inspector & Arson Investigator and also maintains his EMT certification.
Chris Baker
Instructor Chris Baker has over 10 years of experience in volunteer, combination and career fire departments in California. He started as a volunteer firefighter for the West Stanislaus Fire Protection District and the City of Patterson in 2006. In 2007, Chris became a paid reserve Firefighter / Driver-Operator for the City of Patterson Fire Department. He spent four seasons with CAL FIRE as a seasonal Firefighter, two years with the Chevron Fire Department as a Firefighter / Engineer and three years as a Firefighter / Acting Engineer with a municipal fire department in the San Francisco Bay Area. Chris holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Anthropology from Pacific Lutheran University, Associates of Science Degree in Fire Service Command Company Officer from Shasta College. He is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Emergency Services Administration.

Jumpseat Radio 061 Is Aggressive a bad word?

THE IRONY OF LIFE
Born and raised in northern Sweden I had no ambition to join the fire service. As youth passed by, a career behind a desk started to look more and more like prison. I ended up in Firefighting School and later in a fire service working as a firefighter. Today I serve as a Battalion Chief. Now I sit behind a desk most of my time. The irony of life. However, I keep my feet on the ground, training firefighters is still my main focus. In this new day of the technology age I realize that I can inspire and educate more firefighters through the computer. That idea keeps me motivated behind my desk.
I am standing on the shoulders of giants. Where would I be if I had not started asking questions to Stefan Svensson? Where would I be if I had not read Eurofirefighter by Paul Grimwood? Where would I be if I had not traveled to Croatia to meet Shan Raffel and John McDonough? The list of people that has greatly contributed to where I am today is far too long to mention here. But know that I am grateful.
FAILURE IS THE FIRST STEP TO SUCCESS
The harder things I try to accomplish, the greater the risk of failing. I have tried many things where I have succeeded. But I have also failed many times. Being a Firenerd means learning from all experiences, and sharing them with others. That is why I call myself the Swedish Firenerd. With pride.

I am Lori Mercer AKA "WifeOnFire" and founder of this community. My husband Dan is the firefighter who qualifies me for this noble title and who so courageously has chosen to lead with Husband and Dad as his most important titles, even before that already amazing title of Firefighter.
Together we give our all at parenting our 4 kids (as of Feb 2015 ages 15, 12, 10 and 7). When we were newlyweds and the kids were toddlers and pre-schoolers and I was seemingly always pregnant or nursing non-stop, we were a bit of a train wreck. And I partially blamed the fire service. By the grace of God we survived! And we're here to share our story and make a safe haven of encouragement for others fire families.

Tony is a Firefighter for the Winston Salem Fire Dept. where he has served over 27 years. He is currently assigned to Rescue 1, the only rescue truck in the city, that responds to all working fires and technical rescues.
After the show…..
Once we ended the podcast Tony called back to share this confirming experiences following his return to active firefighting duty. He describe it as a series of events that proved that God is continuing to watch over him.
While on an airplane ride to a mission trip, after returning to work, Tony began to read “Is Heaven Real.” He quickly realized that he shared the same birthday as Colton Burpo,the boy the book is written about.Tony found it odd that of all birthdays, they shared the same. On the same plane ride a passenger noticed the book he was reading and shared that she too had the same birthday, May 19th, Tony again was shown God’s direction in his life. As the final topping on the cake on May 19th, his birthday, Tony was eating Chinese food and opened a fortune cookie that read: “God looks after you especially”
“Ryan I have eaten Chinese Food my entire life I had never seen a fortune like this”, Tony explained. “Until this very day I carry this fortune with me as a reminder that God is watching over me.”
